Medicare Part D Insurance

Medicare is the Federal Health Insurance program primarily for Americans age 65 and older but is also available to younger people that have certain disabilities. It is run by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It was signed into law in 1965, Medicare currently covers over 60.8 million people. Medicare was never intended to pay 100% of care. Medicare beneficiaries pay a monthly premium and a portion of their medical expenses, which includes deductibles, copayments, co-insurance and services not covered by Medicare

There are four parts to Medicare:

Medicare
Part A

Also called hospital insurance for individuals who are eligible for Medicare.

Medicare
Part B

Also called medical insurance, covers outpatient care.

Medicare
Part C

Commonly referred to as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare.

Medicare
Part D

The prescription drug plan helps pay for medications doctors prescribe for treatment.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is a prescription drug plan that helps pay for medications doctors prescribe for treatment. The prescription drug plan is required when you first go on to Medicare or you may pay a Late Enrollment Penalty later. Some Medicare Advantage Plans already have this benefit included. If not, you cannot have a Stand Alone Prescription Drug Plan and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time. You can add a Stand Alone Prescription Drug Plan to Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement or Medigap plan. Each prescription drug plan has their own list of medications or formulary. These plans are tier based and vary by carrier.
